TV IN THE AFTERNOON

the
thin
ascetic
face
of the hitman

is english pale
in the spanish bright

& his filter-less cigarette
looks big
 as bathroom plumbing

under the blankest rayban stare

~

let the camera
linger some
on the afternoon sun
at the seasons end
& on the tea
in the gazebo
& the people sat there
& the flowers
round about too

OR THE CLOSEST I WANT TO

i reckon music
is
the
closest
i will get to god

or the closest i want to

it marks the world

arse to the light
&
flowers for the moon

PURPLE FLOWERS

the dawn is late

all airbrushed aluminium clouds
and
pink star war laser bursts

two birds fly past each other
in
the
silent
watercolours

i wonder like a poet -
do they even know each other?
and
all
that
implies . . .

hospital staff arrive
smiling at the break in the cloud
with
a
bunch
of purple flowers and butterflies
for
a
tall
strong
bereaved
head nurse

WHY NOT PLANT FLOWERS THERE

the young man died on a sunny summer evening
walking home
on a 60mph hospital back lane

the flowers are browning in rain filled plastic
the framed picture warps like waves
and
a fresh bouquet is wrapped in a skull and crossbones scarf
at the spot
on the untrimmed verge
where
theres a short cut across the ditch from MHU

the smokers and security still talk about it
vicariously
and
undecided
who
he
was
