POSSIBLE REPOEM

i must have expressed before

in the spill of pub table ash
corralled by spent matches
maybe
or
on a paperbacks flyleaves
left in a green field
i thought was a cold steel rail

how i cant tell

zen from madness
or
denial from a medical high

& how the rub & nub & oomph of it
is if it really matters

but i am sure of this -

i still find it poem
to difficult an end well

FREE THEN I SUPPOSE

we
lay
in
the corn lake
under the sun king
horizon a memory
waiting on the dark

~

we
went
down
the farmer lanes
& the train spurs
to the corner pubs

felt like Stand By Me on drugs

~

& high & young
& haystack scratched
every blink
became a
matrix glitch

a festival-eye
insomnia re-render

~

& cold glasses
& muddy boots
&
the pool table naked under stars

free as we could be

for then

i suppose

FADE OUT WITH BACKWARD STEPS

pub closing
put me out
up the peasants hill
in the
estuary nights
floating satanic grey

i - shortcut fuckwit
embraced
weeknight
marshside
subventure

wet got in my socks
& work in 6 hours
one thousand miles away

~

cattle
in the
soft walls
of
heavy marsh mist

elephant shadows
contrived
as the sea

they fade out with backward steps

~

i look for Nothing
maybe Somethings there

war residue
pillboxes
squat stoic
&
fade out with backward steps

ghost farmers late night
heifer hunt tractor lights
head east
in an
up & down
smear smudge
mission jag

~

i am
in a
bathroom bin
cottonwool ball

boots
a
memory

knee down
all gone

faded out
with
each
backward step

now
all directions
the same

ROSE ON THE PEER TIDE

rec ground-
i am young

group of us
off pubward

got cash
got keys

i - a Proper Person

big words
body shots

crest a hill

Arriving !

~

crossing the cricket crease-

a long
second
of pure
natural
metabolic buzz

no shame
youth electric
a crusade

memorable
like

parking garage attack

small world
at
my
mistaken feet

~

grolsch & scotch
b&h & bics

sash windows
shoved up

summer night
graveyard song

magical now

then - tight & cluefree

abandoned into awkward embrace

rising
on
the
peer
tide

living
the coroners report

NO SHIT LITTLE FRIEND

i had a little friend
once upon a time

and he would say
motorbikes are the safest
cos you can jump free
in a
traffic accident
situation

he said that
no shit

my little friend

~

and
my little friend
moaned
about
the
walk
home
after the pub so much
i used to carry him

he would call me his cart horse
and say giddyup horsey

we had no cash for a cab
he had no money for rounds
i had a bottle for the road

my dreams were blinkered
under
the
inconstant trumpet moon
and
strength was all i had

for me
for my little friend
for anyone

~

and one time

i dont know why

but
i kicked him in the kneecap
with my work boots on
and he fell down a hill
where the town stopped
and the marsh started

and now i never understood this
but he was always keen
to re-enact this event

he was
no shit

and i was always willing
to kick
my little friend
in the kneecap
with my work boots on

~

hes gone now

to the
southern hemisphere

and
the
last
time
i
saw
him
was in awful daylight
outside the library
cos he wouldnt
come out
for evening drinks
anymore

he must stay in
he said
to polish his parents brass

my little friend said that
no shit

~

i wonder how he is
and if he remembers his cart horse
like
i
remember
the
jumper
he
wore
that would ripple with flames
if you threw a lit match at him

and
we
all
did
that

MOANOLOGY 2

i got too many computers.
dont know HOW i got so many computers.
i been GIVING them away.

try telling that to a ten year old me as he watched in horror and awe at S***** P**** kicking his vic20 to death on the school yard concrete.
that was 198? - deep in teacher strikes and the schools on fire ! grey smoke damaged text books to learn about crop rotation and the War of Some Roses for the rest of our school sentence.

you HAVE to go too.
dont you ?
illegal not too.
but after ?
not allowed in AT ALL.
i'd love to go sit at those crummy desks.
walk those halls.
remembering.
and feeling relief its all over.

i did once.
after the pub.
we hoped a fence.
walked round the buildings.
tried a window.
unlocked.
we climbed in.
sat in our old seats as best we could remember them.
had a nose up the corridor.
them left and went to smoke weed on the hockey pitch.

silent alarm wasnt there ?

see blue lights flashing off concrete walls.
torches swinging round the blocks.
we went off the hockey pitch to the hedgerows next to the farmland. crouched down.
watching.
SO pleased we'd left.
and not sauntered deeper in.

cant go back.

anyway.
computers.
i use them but still i get a cramp up my back stairs that i have to WRITE out with pencils and paper.

stationary.
it even smells good.

and the best place to keep books is the bathroom.
did you know that ?
stops them drying out and the glue going dry and yellow and wrong like all my old Bond paperbacks.

in
the
stale
industrial
air

bus to the pub
by the river
  next

lose
my
mind

to thin lizzy / nirvana / pinball ding & rattle
in the mud stink of the estuary air

FUCKTOWN MONKEYS

in
shrunk cap-sleeves
picked
for
swollen gym guns
and
long shorts
showing tattoo shapes
painted
on
powder-bulked calves
fucktown monkeys
banter over-loud
dull bravado
ALRIGHT LUV to the barmaid
but
they
never
meet her blonde
bambi-mother
eyes
while
the missus
sits
silent and lost
and
disinterested
and
sitting with
legs wide
their
balls clearly humungous
they
bounce a kicker boot
up down up down
and
jangle car keys
and
clutch a phone
and
look their missus
up down up down
who's
sitting silent
and lost
and
disinterested
then
their
mobile bleeps

download ringtone
and
piss-hole
piggy eyes
focus middle distance
as
self-importance
lifts their
babystubble chin
and
its all YER MATE, OUT IN PUB INNIT
and
after the call
they're silent
and lost
and
disinterested
and
stare out the window
at a blonde
across the street
under
the Costa sign
with
Esso garage
petrol prices
and shes silent
and lost
and
disinterested
her dead gaze
on
her
pierced nails

THE PUBS GONE

all-weather speakers would play classic metal
and
we’d shout BOAT at slow tankers
magritte large
riding high on grey thames
and
we’d steal bar stools made from beer barrels
pry up all the cats eyes out the car park
and
there’d be 11 o clock whip-round for rip-off machine fags
and
clean-hair weekend-rockers wear wife-hemmed jeans
would arrive at 6 and sip slow dull ales
and
we’d clatter and tilt the pinball
line up fifty pee’s on the pool
barman pouring shots and popping brown bottles
at a wave and a nod
and
later
we’d lose and find and smoke hash blims on derelict jetties
and
the open fire would crackle at winter lunch times
smoky day-lit ashtray tables would pile with pint glasses
with the new white euro pint line
and
we’d use the pay phone on the bar for friends and drugs and cabs
fumbling the coins in when they answer
but
new orange flats grew up fast from industry wasteland
and
all the bikers moved down river
denim regulars fell out with gay rumours
and
the fireplace was blocked in
and
canteen tables bolted down in squares
and
all the bar brass ripped out
and
a papier-mâché castle appeared in the dart board corner
for djs ticketed nights
and
no
one

went anymore

PREINTERWEB PUB HILL BENCHES

well i was only going out for beers and shots
and
no offence
to the luxurious charms of the bigger lady
but
the half dozen abandoned porn mags
left on the pub hill bench 199? folded open to the stars
were
unflattering in angle lighting and gynecological detail
and
crudely
titled
Fat and Slack

RED CASTLE, YEARS AGO

Strange days
of insular habit,
direction?
looking for the same buzz.
Sitting in
wooden paradise corner
of meat sandwiches.
Under
the tall windows
of my
wooden epiphany,
I swore – Fucking!
Top hat students
talk too painful for me
of young electric life.
Drinks are cold
and halved
quickly,
I read Lorca.
Old sagging
hulks in greys
buried in the papers
scalps pointing
across the bar.
Bar girls
in orange,
no flutterbys
no more,
are polite
to my shaved head
but keen
to move on.
And the young screamed,
eager
to perpetuate
their bubble
that rang vague bells
in me.

Glorious mission
they have found
in pub sofas
and in
cigarette cuffs.
I remembered,
holding Lorca,
as the light
uncontrollably
angered me
in principal.
I bought
Pound
which
‘no one reads for pleasure’
and a mist came down.
I remember
last night
of beef tins
with stretched handles.
Image;
warm fog
of long walks
damps peripheries
shining grey.
A mist
of accepted regret
of spreading wings
of happenstance.
Ridden hard
for the only quest;
for a better tomorrow
and
kitchen.
Aborted Texaco corners
lost in the Liquor Inn,
hard legs
pounding wrong
streets of Turk nights
Men there
coffee seated
with phones,
smooth lines
waiting
in silent attendance.
Monitoring the ether
from the garden
furniture tables.
Walking where
I only saw before,
under my own train line
of wine
riding a curved bridge
past me.
