KITCHEN INTERLUDE

sliced green peppers
with a sharp sharp knife

& laughing
at the bums
of the radish

JUST SO MUCH PAPER

my
cardboard folder of poems
was
suddenly just so much paper

& i took my hand
to the train station home

in the tunnel vision
of october dusk

the
city laughing
in
alfresco clots

BALLAD OF A CURTAIN TWITCHER, THEY VANISH WHEN OBSERVED

  when
  theres
  laughing
& theres talking
& its getting closer
& its getting louder
& youre looking
& youre peeping
& youre watching
& youre peering
  out the window
  into the street

  but theres silence

  no one is there

STUFF I HEAR NO 2

a handbrake yank & screech
& the postmans out & laughing
his radio not on today

the vans sliding door slides open
with a sound hard to describe -

a latch crunch-clack
& truncated roller rail wail ?

anyway -
he ho-hums his round away
pausing for jabber natter

yeah mate
yeah mate
yeah

HID HIS WORDS IN DIRGE

the first time i saw dylan
he was alien to me

DESIRE BOB PLAY DESIRE BOB

yelled the lunatic behind us
pissing off everyone near him

but the travelling mumbleberry
hid his words in dirge
&
left the stage -

left us

with
a
p r o l o n g e d
double bass solo

before a mangled watchtower

~

the second time i saw dylan
i thought i was more prepared
but
his rodeo-pimp-chic
his full-on folkabilly barrage -

well i could not stop laughing

&
i pissed off
everyone
near
me

FROM A CEMETERY BENCH

in the earth
this marsh-close clay

the dead lay
some not even bones now

tucked away
&
love broken

headstones have little to say
but

the fallen berries
tucked
in
lacquered crevices

make a playful squirrels day

~

it comes back to this -

scratch
the blank
wide open

&
be as water
with the ink

bent & coping on the cemetery bench

every
laughing
groundhog day

EVERYTHING IS PERMITTED

we
are
grounded monkeys
in homegrown polyester

proud of our cutlery thumbs
hot as heaven & cold as hell

& mad
with
the
thinking virus

the others
in the universe
are laughing at us

but
jealous
too

at the ease
of our
hypocrisy

& how we wear our morality
like disposable
latex gloves
