LOOKING APOCRYPHAL

when your reflection
looks wrong
looks colourised
looks apocryphal
&
looms like a hangover
out the dim glass
action figure perfect
& action figure wrong

you wonder

how was that
ever forged
into something
that worked ?

RITICULATED NOSTALGIA

DAWN FLASHBACKS

dawn
was hot boiled eggs
was an ersatz citrus shower*

dawn
was all the flashbacks
the above entail

& they would crowd me
like inside a kaleidoscope
on my way to work
hangover in my backpack
wheels in the wet
memories on tap

on tap ? dam burst !

~

*SHOWER PRODUCT FLASHBACK

the school organised
work experience
bus journey
to
the
dead dead office**
of drawing boards
& resentment
& nose hair
& silence the radio could not cut
& that ammonia copier
in the windowless room
downstairs away from them

(& lunch in the murky mall
 bench outside Our Price
 everyone buying
 Superdrug hair gels
 & Pet Shop Boys lps
 & shrieking at fashion)

~

**DEAD OFFICE FLASHBACK

sat on the carpet
after spam & beans

& kids lunchtime TV
shows Playschool

going thru the round window
or thru the square window
to
show
me
the factories & the working farms
&
the
grey grey grey
of it all
when i was four

MEAT DOWNLOAD

jagged & drunk
we had fondue
on the balcony

& watched
a hundred trains
roll into waterloo

in an autumn
that was winter
too soon

~

& later
stretched out
on the living room rug

i watched
upside-down
out of the window

at the  h - y - p - h - e - n  flow
of planes
into heathrow

counting my hangover

ACID SHOCK OF MORTAL CALENDAR

if you lose rhythm
look for it
its behind the hangovers
behind the never-was
behind the to-do list of not-right-now
thats long as all your arms

and be careful where your eyes slide

find a gentle shrub
with a bird on
with no appointments looming
no doorbell to blast

or little beetles
busy on the impossible leaves
ignorant of panama
and the tabloid scream

so careful where your eyes slide
into that glass universe
of endless dark materials
you
can
be
shaken shook smashed
like by finding out for example

just for example

that
Home Alone was released
closer to the Moon Landing
than to today

and youd throw up
in your mouth a little
and
think

but wait !

thats the rhythm
right there

in the acid shock
of the
mortal calendar

and again youre the bungalow man
in bungalow land
you dont know where the bungalow ends
and
the
man
began

and ok
you think
ok
thats pissed me off enough
that i can do another day

SPORTS ARE GREEN (IF ROLLERBALL WAS REAL I'D FOLLOW IT)

NEW YEARS DAY

is
stale like old bread

in-your-face normal

not
worthy
of
conversation

and all the decorations seem garish now
like
a
hangover
strung
across
the
room

open all the doors and windows

do something normal

settle
for
a
windblown walk

among englands kipple
under
off-white clouds

MEMORY ORPHANS

memories walk odd in gossamer shadows
from tea trees
and conifer
and
what i saw there in the dappled puddles
and
what you saw there on the bleached kerbs
can never agree

memories walk odd like orphans
like i dreamt them
and grafted them onto photo's
or
made them up on a bad hangover saturday
covered in gin sweat and horror
and
tho
maybe
wrong and created in blank solitude
i encourage them to haunt me
afraid of . . . WHATEVER . . .
if
i
let
them go
