THE COST OF EXPRESSION IS INCALCULABLE

i hear
a lot
about
people
saying
to
artists

is your art free ?

when dude think about it
its not even free to DO

~

stones leak
blood tears
mix with
cold sweats
warm salt

they run together
like rust in rain
make a pattern
like the mekong delta

on
my
fourteen acres
of
tsunami debris

rolled up and forced
into
faulty thin skin -

       pretends to be
        Lizard  Tough

     in a pigs ear !

and
a
never-white-again
supermarket vest

SMALL BIRDS AND SLEEPSIDE DREAMS

small birds

new starlings

come out the apple tree
three at a time

and treat the lawn
dense with clover
like

Homebase OAP weekend sale

~

could i be one
one day
and know what
to do ?

when to gather fibre
how to build ?

and
when the best time is
to shit on the roses ?

~

and the cosmonauts tranquilisers
came in vegetarian capsules

brought -
gift of rest
that regular oblivion

and
i
dreamed
i
was

beacon
in the big big sea

half light house half roman god
in levis
hoody
and
nike airs

oceans lapping at my doubleknot laces

~

and
the
new birds

small starlings

well they hatched
with a shopping list ready

i am on the back step
i look for the lizard they used to be

realising again
how uncomfortable it makes me
that
they
have no arms

and if their wings
are really
an adequate payoff

ALLEY

1. FORDS

years and tears ago
our side alleyway
was new orange brick
with
wind holes to stretch up on tip toe
and
peep
thru
at the Cortinas and Corsairs
inching into their garages
after
i
got
in
from
school
and
supper
was in the stove

2. TAILS

one day playing alone i found a lizard
poised
in
the
shadows there
and
next doors cat
tail straight up like an ariel
was
on
the dustbin lid

watching

clumsily i touched the lizard
and
his
tail
came off

the cat came to see
and
i stroked his back
and
when
i reached his tail
he
slashed
at
me
with his front claws

i ran inside

the alley a dark danger
of
animals
and
tails
to
me
now

I CLOSE MY EYES

and
on
the
the monochrome kaleidoscope
of
streetlight painted eyelids
i'm
shown
awful mind-films

a
lizard with a rock-head enters half-world left
and
eats
aborigines made of night-fuzz

tho
not
before
i
see
clear
their wide scream eyes

goodbye sleep then
i
think
and reach for the lamp
and
book

OUR BREATH IS NOT NEW

our discoveries stand in old old footsteps
stamped
into ice

and
our
breath is not new - it came out in clouds
before
the old horned lizards
cracked
their
eggs
and mammals were made as slaves from dew and stardust

our old
breath is with arrogant and sick from invisible cables
that
tie
our mother and confuse her bees

and now
we make particles cheat their rules
and
catch them on a concrete wall of xray film in paris
BEFORE
they
leave
