DOWN THE LANE

we would scrabble
and slip and slide
to see pigs snuffling
over the other side
of the slate stone wall

in easter sunday silence
we would watch chicks hatch
in hot light bulb arenas
and guilty we would chose one
to cook for christmas dinner

tho i never believed
the farmer really
kept track

and the dogs he kept
in the barnyard cage
would shatter me
with their barking
